Handling a Chromebook: Dos and Don'ts

By Mr. Pawlowski, Lasselle Elementary
Our campus offers twenty-three Google Chromebook carts for teachers to check out on a daily basis. Each cart contains 38 units for student use. Contact the Library to reserve one of these carts.

Logging on to a Chromebook:

Chromebook carts require the use of a VVUSD Google account.

STUDENTS:
  • Username is:
    FirstName+.+First3LettersofLastName+BirthMonth+BirthDay+@valverde.edu

  • Password is: 10-digit Permanent ID number (on ID card)
  • EXAMPLE: John Smith, DOB: 06/22/94
                      Perm ID: 2000054321

username: john.smi0622@valverde.edu, password: 2000054321

STAFF:

  • Username is:
    FirstInitial+LastName+@valverde.edu

  • Password is: your current Windows desktop password
If you are unable to log on to a Chromebook with your staff account, you can:
Reset your own VVUSD Google password by resetting your desktop password. Once the desktop password is changed, it automatically syncs your Google password to match. Try manually resetting your desktop password (when logged onto computer, press CTRL+ALT+DEL, click Change password...), then check Google again.

Reserving A Cart

To reserve a Chromebook cart for your students please visit the following web page:

ttp://ranchoverde.valverde.edu/teacherresources/Chromebook%20Cart%20Checkout/‚Äč

Requests are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Please reserve only 2 full days per week, if possible. If you end up not needing to use the cart, contact the Library as soon as possible to cancel your request.

IMPORTANT: BEFORE having students use the Chromebooks, make sure all students have their usernames/passwords and are able to log in successfully. You can check their network account status/usernames/password by looking in Aeries, Student Info, under the "Network Login ID" field. >>More about Student Accounts

  1. Look at the current openings on the calendar for your department (see links to the left). Be sure to take note of what dates are available. You must reserve the cart for the entire day, not just for a period. For accountability purposes, carts are to be checked out to ONE TEACHER per day. That teacher is 100% responsible for the care/condition of the cart.
  2. Determine which specific date(s) you want (write them down, if necessary).
  3.  EMAIL Library with your requests. Please DO NOT try to modify the calendar. It is READ-ONLY.
  4. You will receive an email notification directly from Sharp School for your requests that are approved. The email will include a link that takes you directly to the calendar entry. Save this email for your reference.

Guidelines, Tips, & Resources

Teacher Guidelines:

  • Teacher must book a date for the cart via the online calendar.
  • Teacher must report to the librarians to pick up a key to the cart.
  • Teachers are responsible for the cart that they check out and cannot transfer cart to another teacher.
  • Teacher must count and check that all 38 chromebooks are plugged in to be charged.
  • Cart must be returned to the library before 3:00 p.m. along with the key.

Google Chromebook Tips:

  • Chromebooks are not Windows devices. They do not have Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Paint, etc.) installed. Instead, they have "Google Drive" apps (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Draw) that are "compatible" with Microsoft Office. Click for help with Google Drive.
  • Chromebooks are not to be logged on with students' personal Gmail accounts. Only district-issued Google accounts should be used.
  • Students can use USB flashdrives with the Chromebooks to store files "offline" (download); otherwise, all files will be saved to their Google Drive online "cloud" storage. All files saved to the Google Drive can also be accessed from any other device with access to the web (i.e. desktop computers, smartphones, tablets, etc.). Students have 30GB of storage space for any non-Google Docs files (music, videos, pictures, PDFs, etc.). Google Doc files do not count toward the 30GB space limit in the student's Drive account.
